From the recording Beginning To See

“Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” (I Corinthians 13:12)

The song tells the story of the shepherd on the cover who makes it all the way to the end of the world, peeks out his head, and begins to see true reality. I can relate to the journey the shepherd has taken... each day I see just a bit more of God’s vastness, his power, and his love. And one day I shall see it all.

This tune is 100% “in the box” recorded in Pro Tools software, and, besides the song "Even Now A Glimpse" was the last tune I wrote for the project. It is basically a simple 12 note theme that is reworked through several key modulations linked together by parallel major seventh chords. The ending is quite complex with its cascading ii-v minor sevenths and ascending melody. This section was the hardest thing to write on the record. On this one, all the tracks were virtual instruments... drums, acoustic bass, piano, everything. Upbeat and joyous, it lands a bit on the Metheny/Mays side of the equation. Except there is no guitar.
